#RPGaDAY2024 – Day 1 First RPG

If we look at the whole of the standard prompt, “What was the first RPG that you have purchased this year?” this presents a pretty difficult challenge for those whose answer is that they have bought no RPGs in 2024. Fortunately, we are positive folk eager to expand the effects of the hobby to new players and aging player alike. The bold portion is a stand alone prompt for you to take where you will. First RPG that you played ever; first that you played this year, this week, or today; first that you want to play with a new group…. the possibilities go on and on. If that doesn’t host your sail and send you off into an easy and positive response, there is still the multi-use alternate prompt of sharing a fun anecdote about play, and on top of that there is the entirely different set of roll or pick prompts in the alternate approach from the polish site “Challenge Rating.” We are spoiled for choice.

Several Answers, because: Runeslinger

For me, I have several answers. First, is the first RPG that I spent money on this year. This was The Laundry Second Edition, Kickstarted by Cubicle 7. That was the first instance of spending money on rules for a new game for the year 2024. It was not the first RPG product I bought or kickstarted, but the first new game that I paid for this year.

Now The Laundry 2nd Edition is not ready for release yet, so what is a different RPG that I supported on Kickstarter in 2023 and got in 2024? There were a few backed, such as Outgunned by Two Little Mice, Musketeers vs Cthulhu through Nightfall, and Cohors Cthulhu from Modiphius.

Which one was first to arrive? That would be Musketeers vs Cthulhu, a BRP game released via license to Nightfall Games which arrived early this year. It was the first new game to survive the postal system on its way to me in 2024. Second was Outgunned and it could be said to be the first big game with multiple books and accessories to arrive (but as a game, it was not first. On time, but not first). Cohors Cthulhu is in the process of delivery.

What was a game that I purchased via Kickstarter that went through all of its production and delivery hoops the fastest and therefore delivered on its promises first? This is a supplement, not a game in and of itself, but I feel it is important to mention what is possible with skill, integrity, and passion. Evolution by Design, a supplement for the Gaia Complex RPG by Hansor Publishing takes first place in all Kickstarter categories.

Finally, to round all of this out, what was the RPG product that I ordered this year that came in the shortest amount of time? Well, that is a tie between the Noir RPG sent to me via Noble Knight, and Pendragon 6th Edition, sent to me by Chaosium. Had it been a race, these two would have tied.

Ok, this is a very long short answer to the first prompt. Perhaps there is some positivity in the air?

I may have time to record shorts on YouTube or do blog posts, but probably not both. Due to the changes at Spotify in regard to podcasting, daily posts will be unlikely. I may alternate between the different outlets I enjoy using, or just stick to the blog this year. We’ll see how the spirit moves me as the month plays out!

Until tomorrow, gamers~
