#RPGaDay Day 31: Best Advice

Today is the final #RPGaDay question for 2016:

What is the best advice you were ever given for your chosen game?

The last step is a Duesy~

I play a lot of games, but my chosen game is probably closer to a system and approach than a specific combination of setting and system. This can be seen in my preference for Ubiquity powered pulp heroics games, for Mythras powered games, and for Star Wars by FFG.

The best piece of advice I have been given for my ‘chosen’ game or a game I would choose for this question works for all three. The advice for the way that I play the games that I play is quite simple in form, and as a result quite complex in application. So simple does it look, in fact, that I have noticed it is disregarded even by those people who really need it.

For greater context, please watch the video version of this response.

In one of this blog’s very, very few nutshells, here is the advice:

Know Thyself

What that means is you need to know what you want from the game, know what barriers there are to getting that, and know what you need to do to get it.

This is not some selfish directive to act for your own pleasure, but rather the starting point for discovering the ways and means of actually cooperating with the others to achieve your goals and theirs in ways that make sense.

Simple in form.

Complex in execution.

Responsible for all the great games I have had over the last twenty-some years since the conversation where all of this fell into place in a real way.

#RPGaDay

There is no question for tomorrow, but look for wrap-up and recap posts in the next few days.

Thank you for those who participated by answering questions and those who participated by reading and watching them.

Speak your piece~
