#RPGaDAY2024 – Day 4: Cosmic Monster
Today, for #RPGaDAY2024 I am going to take my prompt from the alternate set provided by “Challenge Rating” in Poland. I will mostly be sticking with the standard prompts, but I want to have fun with theirs, too. The theme for Day four is Cosmos and my roll for the randomizer was a 1 so I will be describing a monster. As I have been playing almost enough Call of Cthulhu lately, I will share an entity that I created from various inspirations, including Lovecraft and Stephen King, when the die stopped rolling a moment ago.
The Dissolver of Bonds
This entity, from a human perspective – albeit one from a shattered mind, resides in the empty spaces beneath notice, between matter and energy, between yes and no, between is and is not. It did not go there to eke out its existence, its existence caused those negligible and empty spaces to form. It exists as a concept that erases itself out of being and takes the universe with it. It is the self-negating principle in action. Once our universe was connected, each iota of matter in contact with each other. Then, the Dissolver of Bonds, once outside this universe, found itself erasing its way back toward itself in a brilliant falling apart from loss and dissipated contact.
No point of contact is safe.
The Dissolver of Bonds erodes and ultimately removes ties of family and friendship, of community and empathy. It weakens attraction, deadens love, encourages hunger and loneliness. It writhes in the disconnection of isolation. In its wake lies separation, distance, and the loss of identity. It is the lie that kills truth and the doubt that destroys belief.
Some would say that humanity has been lucky so far, as Earth seems to have been untouched by the Dissolver of Bonds. The wise and the sensitive, however, know this to be a lie. The world shows them how pale it is. The world is the fourth horse, these poor insightful souls think, and they await the coming dark as the cold-hearted worshippers of the Dissolver do its work of their own sick volition.
